Getting AC Out of Thin Air
Heat pumps function by transferring the heat energy in air from one place to another. By moving (instead of generating) heat, a heat pump is very efficient, producing between 3 to 10 times more energy than it consumes.
Even when temperatures feel cold, heat energy is present. In winter, a heat pump extracts heat from the outside air, compresses it to a higher temperature and then delivers it to your home. In summer, it reverses directions, acts like an air conditioner, and removes heat from your home.
A heat pump can be added to an existing gas, electric or oil furnace. With a built-in heat source, a heat pump can replace a furnace.
Heat pumps come in two configurations:
- A central heat pump, which uses existing ductwork to deliver heat to the whole building.
- A ductless heat pump for homes and other buildings without existing ductwork. A ductless system can heat a specific zone or a whole building.
AAA Northgate offers Carrier heat pump packages.
Replacing Your Air Source Heat Pump
A heat pump is rated in three ways:
- Coefficient of Performance (COP): How many units of energy the heat pump provides for every one unit it uses to extract heat.
- Heating Season Performance Factor (HSPF): The efficiency rating over the heating season.
- Seasonal Energy Efficiency Factor (SEER): The efficiency rating over the cooling season.
The higher the COP, the HSPF, or the SEER ratings, the more efficient the heat pump. In Central Illinois, ENERGY STAR® rated heat pumps must have an HSPF of 8.2 or greater and a SEER of 14.5 or greater.
If you have an existing heat pump and rely on it for your heating needs, you might consider a new unit with higher operating efficiency in cold temperatures. Most heat pumps installed prior to 2010 had to be oversized to provide 100 percent of the space heating needs.
The new generation of heat pumps are much more efficient. They use variable capacity compressors with ‘inverter’ technology, more efficient blowers and motors and smart controls to provide heat more efficiently.
